10 Free (or Almost Free) Outdoor Adventures in Whatcom County

by Briddick Webb

Living in Whatcom County means you’re never far from a trail, a beach, or a view that stops you in your tracks. Whether you’re new to the area or just looking to mix things up, here are 10 outdoor spots where you can get out, recharge, and soak up the local beauty — all without spending a dime (or close to it).

1. Wander Whatcom Falls Park
A classic for a reason. This Bellingham favorite has dreamy waterfalls, mossy bridges, and meandering trails that are perfect for a lunchtime reset or a family stroll. You’ll find playgrounds, picnic tables, and even a spot for kids to fish.

2. Check out the Pier at Little Squalicum Park
Tucked between the waterfront and the woods, Little Squalicum Park is a low-key gem. Bring your dog, your walking shoes, or just a coffee and good podcast — the newly renovated pier has incredible views over Bellingham Bay.

3. Hike the Oyster Dome Trail
For a little leg burn and a major reward, Oyster Dome delivers. The view from the top looks out over the San Juans and it’s absolutely worth the sweat. Pro tip: hit it on a weekday morning for more peace and fewer people.

4. Bike or Walk the Interurban Trail
Running from Fairhaven to Larrabee State Park, this wide gravel trail weaves through the forest with peekaboo ocean views. It’s great for bikes, joggers, strollers, or just a slow walk with a friend.

5. Watch the Sunset at Boulevard Park
It’s hard to beat golden hour at Boulevard. Grab some Woods coffee, walk the boardwalk, and post up on the rocks or grass as the sun dips behind Lummi Island. Instant calm.

6. Swim (or Paddle) at Lake Padden
In the summer, this is the spot. You’ve got a swimming beach, trails around the lake, a dog park, and even a little golf course nearby. Great for paddleboarding or kayaking if you’ve got your own gear.

7. Explore Stimpson Family Nature Reserve
Less crowded than the city parks, Stimpson is peaceful and full of towering trees and quiet loops. It’s a perfect Sunday reset walk, especially in the fall when the leaves light up.

8. Walk the Boardwalk in Taylor Dock
Connect Fairhaven to Boulevard Park on this over-the-water trail. Sunset or sunrise, rain or shine — it’s one of the most photogenic walks in town.

9. Hike up to Fragrance Lake
This one’s in Larrabee State Park and it’s a favorite mini adventure. A few miles of uphill hiking leads to a calm alpine lake, perfect for a snack break or dipping your toes in.

10. Cruise the Semiahmoo Spit Trail
Head up to Blaine for a change of pace. This easy gravel path hugs the coastline with views of Drayton Harbor and Mount Baker. You might even spot seals, herons, or eagles while you're out there.
